What do I have to do to go to Second Life?

Registration in second life is free, quick, easy and pretty straight forward. It will take you roughly 10-20 minutes. I will walk you through the process.

First, go to the Second Life home page.

You will arrive at a page that looks like this.

Click the "Join Now" button.

It will take you to a sign-up page. There are 3 parts to the sign-up page. The first part asks you for basic information.

Some people may want to leave false information. I would caution against this as it may come back to bite you. You may at some point want second life money to purchase clothing, etc., to own land, or visit the adult areas of the site. In each case, you will be asked to verify your information.

The next step is choosing your name.

Choosing a name requires a little thought because you can't change it once you complete the registration.

The first step is choosing a first name. You can choose any name you want and can include numbers. But I would advise against getting cute or using a joke name. This will stick with you a while. Also, complicated names are difficult for others to type. You want to make communication as easy as possible for your friends.

My suggestion, for what it is worth, is to choose a name that represents the ideal of who you want to become or how you see yourself in your favorite light. After all, you are joining to make a shift in your life. Why not start now.

Once you have chosen a first name, click the green button to select a last name from a list. Look for one that fits with the first name you have chosen. If you don't find one that you like, pick any one. You can then re-click the button and get a new set of names. You can do this until you find the right name.

Caution: If you do find one that feels good, keep it and stop looking. You may not be able to find it again if you continue to search. The names seem to be randomly generated from a pool of names, and may not reappear.

Now you pick your avatar. Pick the one you like, but this step is not really that important. Changing your look will probably be one of the first things you want to do. It is relatively easy to do.

The final step is to create a security question in case you lose your password.

Choose and answer your security question. Also fill in the code words.

Now you complete the registration process.

Two things will happen. You will be sent an email verifying your registration; then you will be instructed how to download the software.

The next thing you know, you will be standing in Second Life wondering what to do next. The next page will help acclimate you to Second Life at their "Welcome Island."
