For artists who love to explore Spirit, and spiritual people who love to explore art

Dear %$firstname$%,

I attended another peaceful art association still life session. This time I used pencil: "Hydrangea and Angel" (19"Hx12"W).

Which made me want to talk about pencil.

Isn't pencil simple and sweet? You can take it anywhere. But for a finished drawing rich in values, you really need a few different pencils, plus paper with a certain amount of tooth and thickness to it (in other words, not slick typing paper).

Now, I always thought you just use the hard pencils (called H) when you want a lighter value and a more precise line, and the soft pencils (called B) when you want a darker value.

But it turns out you can do so much better than that! Did you know that to get your nice, deep darks, you don't have to dig into the paper with the H's nor make a big graphite mess with the B's?

I learned this hugely helpful tip a few years ago from an old book called Pencil Drawing, by Ernest W. Watson.

When you want to darken an area, start with a soft pencil (say 4B or 6B). Then lightly sketch a layer of hard pencil over it. This embeds the graphite gently into the paper. You get a velvety, soft darkness without digging into the paper, so then you can layer the two types of pencils again to get yet deeper tones.

Oh, lovely!

Speaking of angels :), they can certainly help you with today's question for the guides.

"Clarifying My Life Purpose."

Three weeks ago, when Minda channeled on "Do I need to know my mission?" the guides invited us to ask this question to learn the next step. So we thought we'd take them up on it.

Well, I guess they had a lot to say, because Minda kept typing and typing. We always set our timers for a half hour. There's only so much you can do on a sloppy wet watercolor, so I'm pretty aware of how much time a half hour gives me, and when I'm done I'm done. But when the timer went off Minda was still way into it. So I rearranged my paints - she was still going - then I squeezed out all my almost empty tubes - you know, that onerous process - she was still going. Finally she ended. But she said it felt like she could have gone on for three hours.

So I think we'll see more of this subject in the coming months.

Dear Guides,

How can I become clear on my mission or purpose in life?

I think this image shows the "delicate plants ... turning their faces towards you ... growing up taller than the others."

So, what about you? At what outstanding moments in your life have you felt most powerfully aware of your connection with Spirit?

With love,
Julie
